Em entrevista para o The Daily Telegraph fala um pouco sobre o conceito e trabalho desenvolvido para o jardim do RHS Chelsea Flower Show deste ano.

"Por exemplo, neste hotel a preto e branco [Fontana Park Hotel], não estou seguro de o teatro da vida ter sido pensado. Acho, aliás, que esse teatro é inibido. Aqui estamos os dois, sentados nestas cadeiras rígidas, a querer conversar e sem conseguir encontrar uma boa posição. O que gostaria é que houvesse aqui 15 sítios onde pudéssemos tomar café e 93 maneiras de podermos recostar-nos, de estar cara a cara ou de nos tocarmos ou o que raio quiséssemos fazer. No período eduardiano [1901-1910], por exemplo, os arquitectos ingleses eram bons nisso. Um hall de hotel teria uma série de sítios para nos sentarmos juntos. O modernismo pôs isso de parte. O modernismo é pio e os seus seguidores são devotos. O modernismo diz que temos que nos sentar direitos e manter o pacote de batatas fritas no bolso. Eu gosto de ambientes burgueses, gosto de cadeiras confortáveis, muito obrigado, gosto de portas que abrem com facilidade, muito obrigado...

O que estou a dizer é que me interessa muito o vocabulário da forma, do método, dos materiais, da organização, da experiência da vida na arquitectura. E a grande contribuição do grupo Archigram foi ampliar e diversificar esse vocabulário. Muita arquitectura inglesa da altura [da criação do grupo] restringia-se a certos parâmetros modernistas ou históricos. O que o projecto Archigram disse foi: "Esperem lá!, há muitas coisas a acontecer no mundo; produzem-se carros, fazem-se paredes de vidro, as pessoas divertem-se nas praias!" Depois da dissolução do grupo Archigram [em 1974] continuei por esse caminho. Olho para quiosques de rua, para materiais curiosos, vejo o que as pessoas fazem nos autocarros, interessam-me os patins, os skates... Fico fascinado pelo que se passa à minha volta, fascinado por pessoas. Observo, extrapolo e traduzo o que vejo nos maneirismos da arquitectura. Normalmente descrevo-me como um pluralista extremo."

Novo Projecto

A CatarinaGDesigns em parceria com a La Sénia tem um novo projecto em Luanda, terreno com moradia privada e zona para casas modulares para arrendamento a empresas, um projecto ambicioso e que poderá ver aqui o seu desenvolvimento.

Singapore’s landscape architecture plans

Grant Associates and Gustafson Porter have won an international competition, organised by Singapore’s National Parks Board, to design Gardens by the Bay, part of the next phase of the city’s masterplan. The gardens will occupy 101 hectares of prime land by the water and will become part of Marina Bay.
Bay South, designed by landscape architecture firm Grant Associates, will be the largest garden at 54 hectares and will be located next to the Marina Bay integrated resort. The Conservatory Complex will comprise a ‘Cool Moist’ biome and a ‘Cool Dry’ biome, displaying plants and flowers from the Tropical Montane (Cloud Forest) and Mediterranean environments respectively. Designed as tree-like structures between 30 metres and 55 metres in height, the ‘Supertrees’ are uniquely designed vertical gardens, creating a vertical display of tropical flowering climbers, epiphytes and ferns. At night, these canopies will come alive with lighting and projected media.
Sitting in the western bank of Marina Barrage, Bay East will be 32 hectares in size. Gustafson Porter’s design includes water gardens with terraces that cascade down to the Bay’s edge, a Boat House Piazza and an education centre that will tell the story of water in nature, and teach in a creative and interactive manner the symbiotic relationship between plants, animals and water in an aquatic ecosystem.
The first phase of the gardens is scheduled to open in 2011.

Obras no Pavilhão de Portugal arrancam este mês

As obras no Pavilhão de Portugal na Expo 2010, em Xangai, adjudicadas a um consórcio liderado por uma empresa portuguesa sedeada em Macau, deverão arrancar no início de Janeiro.
"É um prazo um pouco apertado, mas exequível", disse uma fonte ligada à participação portuguesa no certame.
A Expo 2010, que decorrerá de 01 de Maio a 31 de Outubro, sob o lema "Better City, Better Life" ("Melhor Cidade, Melhor Qualidade de Vida"), é o maior acontecimento internacional organizado pela China depois dos Jogos Olímpicos de Pequim, no Verão de 2008.
Mais de 200 países e organizações internacionais já confirmaram a participação no certame, que ocupa uma área de 528 hectares (dez vezes a Expo 98, em Lisboa), ao longo das duas margens do rio Huangpu, afluente do rio Yangtze que atravessa Xangai, o centro económico e financeiro da China.
Os organizadores esperam 70 milhões de visitantes, cinco por cento dos quais estrangeiros.
O Pavilhão de Portugal é da responsabilidade de Carlos Macedo e Couto, arquitecto português formado em Lisboa e radicado há vários anos em Macau.
O projecto, orçado em três milhões de euros, foi adjudicado a um consórcio liderado pela Pal Asiaconsult, de Macau, que inclui a YDreams Informática, de Portugal, e uma empresa empreiteira chinesa, sedeada em Xangai.
"CC, Atelier de Arquitectura", "TerraCulta Consultoria, Produção e Gestão Cultural Lda" e "GAP, Gabinete de Arquitectura Paisagística" são as outras empresas que integram o consórcio.
É um pavilhão com 2.000 metros quadrados e inclui um Centro de Negócios, destinado a fomentar contactos entre empresas portuguesas e chinesas, e um espaço chamado "Marca Portugal", onde poderão ser comprados e saboreados produtos portugueses "emblemáticos".
O edifício fica situado junto à Praça Europa, um espaço concebido para poder acolher espectáculos com cerca de 1.200 espectadores, e a sua localização "beneficia ainda da proximidade a uma estação de metro e a uma das entradas no recinto", salienta o Comissariado-geral português.
"Portugal, uma praça para o mundo" e "Portugal, um mundo de energias" é o tema da participação portuguesa no certame.

Swiss architect wins top honour

The most prestigious award for architecture, the Pritzker Prize, has been awarded to the Swiss architect Peter Zumthor.

The prize, worth $100,000, is given for a body of work across a career, and is mainly valued for the prestige and commissions it can bring.

Zumthor's works are found mainly in his native Switzerland, as well as elsewhere in Europe and the US.

His most famous commission is the thermal baths in Vals, Switzerland.

Peter Zumthor is about as far as its possible to be from the star names who have recently dominated architecture.

He has worked in his native Switzerland for the past 30 years and has become known for quietly elegant museums, housing complexes and hotels with a fondness for using natural materials and a great interest in the the interior spaces he creates.

If you think of the big name star architects shouting "look at me", then Zumthor whispers.

He trained as a cabinet maker and there's a strong feel of craft and care to his work.

He says he doesn't ally himself to an ideology or school of architecture, but aims above all at creating an interior suited to place and use, simple principles aimed at producing human architecture.

One extraordinary recent building is a chapel built by wrapping concrete round a wigwam structure of tree trunks.

Zumthor then burnt away the trunks, leaving the imprint of the wood as the texture of the interior, which retains the smell of charred wood.

Zumthor is said to turn down most requests to design, embarking only on projects he feels a passion for and which he then oversees from start to finish.

His buildings have been described as both humble and bold.

Zumthor said the award was a "wonderful recognition".

"That a body of work as small as ours is recognized in the professional world makes us feel proud and should give much hope to young professionals that if they strive for quality in their work it might become visible without any special promotion," he said.

Beautiful Modern House Rises from Stone Ruins

Latvian architects NRJA constructed this beautiful renovation of an old stone barn in Saka, Latvia. Rather than tear down the stone ruins of the barn, the family wanted to use the exterior wall of the barn as a protective barrier surrounding their new home, both for privacy as well as protection from the wind blowing in off the Baltic Sea. The family also wanted to be able to spend calm days viewing the water and their surrounding meadow from their rooftop deck. Their fabulous old exterior with a new modern interiors creates a warm home and a deck with a view.

NRJA has won many prizes for theHouse Ruins since it was built in 2002 - the Gran Prix for the Latvian Architecture Prize in 2005, the Best Technology Award at the Interior Digest Magazine in 2006, and it was nominated for the Mies van der Rohe Award in 2007. The home won the Best Technology Award due to NRJA’s implementation of contemporary construction, constructive and electronic technologies - which means it’s really efficient. With the use of solar passive thermal walls, extensive use of natural lighting, and efficient appliances and lighting, this house is an inspiring example of good green design.

The House of Ruins is about 2,150 square feet, built inside a 19th century traditional Latvian stone barn. The contrast between the old and the new is quite striking. The exterior is shored up in places where it had collapsed with new modern concrete walls. Meanwhile, the home is contained within the confines of the ruin, providing a wind break and privacy wall. The inner courtyard provides a safe haven and a beautiful garden viewable through huge glass windows from the interior living space. Renovations like this one and like the dairy barn we saw recently make use of good structural materials, and update them with a new modern interior.

NRJA is a relatively new firm, started in 2005 by Uldis Luksevic. They are based out of Riga, Latvia and the team has an average age of 25. This talented bunch believes in going beyond the rules and exploring the limits of traditional architecture. Their name sums up this outside-the-box attitude: 'No Rules, Just Architects'. They have some really impressive and cool designs out there - check out their video of all their projects. We swear it will get you so pumped up and excited about buildings and architecture that you’ll be inspired on the spot to design something.

Museu El Prado, Madrid no Google Earth com obras em alta resolução

O espectacular novo edifício do grupo económico BBVA irá estar pronto de acordo com as previsões em 2013 e foi projectado pelos arquitectos Herzog & de Meuron, responsáveis por alguns dos mais fascinantes novos edifícios na Europa, toda esta zona nos arredores de Madrid irá ser renovada, esperemos contar com uma paisagem igualmente espectacular.

Parque Hudson e avenida pela MVVA Designs

Earlier this year Related Companies sealed the deal on New York’s Hudson Yards development, and we’re excited to announce that the competition to design Hudson Park and Boulevard is now coming to a close. Although the Hudson Yards Development Corporation has yet to formally announce a winner, Related has let slip that Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates will likely be the designers of the approximately 4-acre site! The project will convert a semi-industrial area into a lush green space complete with a linear park that will provide a link between the Hudson Rail Yards (located due south of the site) and 42nd Street.

By now the Hudson Yards project may seem like old news in New York, but as the Hudson Park and Boulevard competition comes to a close– this old news may very well become a real urban park. A necessary component of the design was the proposal’s consideration for present and future environmental concerns. Part of MVVA’s response was to recognize the inherent urbanity of the site and to anticipate the space’s future need to provide for a diverse popluation. The landscape architecture firm says they took snippets of inspiration from their Union Square plan, a well-recognized and heavily-trafficked part of New York’s East side. The area is a stop along several subway lines and is home to a farmers’ market that takes place four out of seven days out of the week.

Perhaps taking a hint from the Hudson River Park’s piers, MVVA’s proposal is a flowing, uncomplicated, and flexible open space. Don’t be fooled by the design’s apparent simplicity however - it certainly has its own poetic sensibility. As Matthew Urbanski, principal of MVVA, told The Architect’s Newspaper: “It flows south to the cultural center, then there’s a movement west towards the [Hudson] river”– the project certainly strives to become a place that links to the city’s amenities while offering a sensible and inviting environment for people to gather.

Despite the fact that details of the Hudson Yards development are still left undecided, coupled with the economy’s downturn, the first phase of the Hudson Park and Boulevard is planned to be completed by 2013.

The other finalists for the competition included: Work AC with Balmori Associates, West 8 with Mathews Nielson, Gustafson Guthrie Nichol with Allied Works Architecture, and Hargreaves Associates with Ten Arquitectos.
